Weekend on the Rock, October 3-5, 2014: Carnival, Kol Nidre, Trio Pardalote, & Boys in the Boat

Here are Inside Bainbridge recommendations for the weekend of October 3-5, 2014:

1. Tuesday Painters’ Island Views at 1st Friday Art Walk
When: Friday, 5-7 p.m.
Where: Bainbridge Library, 1270 Madison Ave. N
Why: The Tuesday Painters started almost 10 years ago as students of Gillian Bull. They are, in addition to Bull, Kaye Hansen, Nikki Vick, Susan Rosenberg, Lindsey Craig, Bridget Grant, Joan Kinsman, and Mary Stroeing. Probably some of them paint on other days too, but here you can see the work they did on that one day a week. Light refreshments served.

2. BPA Gallery First Fridays Art Walk: William Baran-Mickle’s “Gestures”
When: Friday, 5-7 p.m.
Where: Bainbridge Performing Arts, 200 Madison Avenue North
Why: Baran-Mickle is lately into hands. He makes them with his own, using a hammer on sheet metal.

3. First Fridays Art Walk
When: Friday, 6-8 p.m.
Where: Downtown Winslow
Why: Food + art.

4. CKS Kol Nidre
When: Friday, 7-9 p.m.
Where: Congregation Kol Shalom, 9010 Miller Rd.
Why: Rabbi Paul Strasko and Cantorial Soloist Laura Mullins-Cannon lead the Kol Nidre, the moving-when-sung legal document that starts like this: “By the authority of the Court on High and by authority of the court down here, by the permission of One Who Is Everywhere and by the permission of this congregation, we hold it lawful to pray with sinners.” Free yourself from some of that guilt and personal responsibility imposed under duress.

BR2014-SquashHunt-300x2505. The Super Squash Scavenger Hunt at Bloedel Reserve
When: Saturday, 10 a.m.-4 p.m.
Where: Bloedel Reserve, 7571 NE Dolphin Drive
Why: There are naughty squash lurking at Bloedel. Children are rewarded with prizes for finding them. Then they are beheaded (the squash—not really). The event runs until November 2. Free with admission.

6. CKS Yom Kippur
When: Saturday, 10:30 a.m.-7 p.m.
Where: Congregation Kol Shalom, 9010 Miller Rd.
Why: Atone. Repent. Rabbi Paul Strasko and Cantorial Soloist Laura Mullins-Cannon lead the service. Children’s service is free and begins at 9:30 a.m. Childcare will be provided by reservation only for the morning service. The afternoon includes a yoga session, a discussion group, and a Torah study with Rabbi Strasko before Minchah.

8. Morgan Brig Gallery Talk
When: Saturday, 12:30-1:30 p.m.
Where: Bainbridge Arts & Crafts, 151 Winslow Way E.
Why: Morgan brig makes very cool, very free, playful thingamajigs. Imagine Hayao Miyazaki or Jules Verne as a sculptor.

No registration required. Free.

9. Intro to Holotropic Breathwork Workshop with Glenn Girlando
When: Saturday, 1-4 p.m.
Where: Dayaalu Center 159 Wyatt Way NE
Why: Learn about the principles and practice of Holotropic Breathwork, including a one-hour mini-breathwork session, and free your mind. Glenn Girlando, M.A., is the facilitator.

10. Meet the Daughters of The Boys in the Boat
When: Saturday, 3-4 p.m.
Where: Bainbridge Library, 1270 Madison Ave. N.
Why: Reflections on the local 1936 Olympic rowing crew of working class boys that gave Adolph Hitler a hearty oar slap. Joe Rantz’s daughter Judy Rantz Willman, Chuck Day’s daughter Kris Day, and noted rowing coach John Lind talk about the boys in the book. Bill Knight, rower and sports writer, facilitates. Then read the book by Daniel James Brown.

11. Astronomy Day and Aurora Planetarium Show at Ritchie Observatory
When: Saturday, 5-10 p.m.
Where: Edwin E. Ritchie Observatory and John H. Rudolph Planetarium in the Helix House at Battle Point Park, 11299 Arrow Point Drive NE
Why: It’s astronomy day! Get a tour of the observatory, blister your eyeballs by looking at the sun through solar telescopes, ooh and aah at the stars once night falls at about 5:01, connect with a comet, and then groove on a 7 p.m. planetarium show on Auroras.

12. The EDGE Improv
When: Saturday, 7:30 p.m.
Where: Bainbridge Performing Arts 200 Madison Avenue North
Why: Celebrate the 20th anniversary season of The Edge by laughing at them.

$16 for adults, and $12 for seniors, students, youth, military, and teachers.

13. First Sundays Concert: Trio Pardalote
When: Sunday, 4-6 p.m.
Where: Waterfront Park Community Center 370 Brien Drive
Why: This critically acclaimed Seattle-based group, which features Victoria Parker on violin, Heather Bentley on viola, and Rowena Hammill on cello, rock the strings. They will be performing the Goldberg Variations by Bach and the Serenade for Strings by Dohnanyi.
